Broken Boxes

A (still) popular saying these days is that we should all strive to “think outside the box.” I have never really liked that saying. It’s inaccurate and can be inhibiting.

My understanding of the saying is that we should strive to think beyond our personal borders, that we should find solutions outside of our own knowledge and experiences. It implies that we can break out of our own boundaries just by thinking. That’s absurd.

We cannot possibly leave ourselves behind and create something from nothing within ourselves. As individuals, we are limited. We cannot break free of the framework, the “box” of our own lives, not alone. Thus, the problem points to the solution.

For example, I have no children and have not been involved in raising any. If faced with parenting questions today, I would turn to others for help. I would seek collective wisdom from friends and families with similar values but different experiences.

What we can do is what we have always done and will always do. Together our imagination activates, we create, and we find answers. Collaboration is the key to shattering the boxes that contain us. Differing perspectives lead to different approaches to answering questions just as diverse experiences reveals different possibilities.

Ideally, collaborative group will be diverse – representing a wide variety of experiences and backgrounds. This diversity is the key to creativity and collective wisdom. If you truly want to think outside the box, gather a diverse group who are interested in answering the question or solving the problem before you. Working together you will find a solution that meets your needs.

Most associations are comprised of members from the same industry, profession, or both. Each group has its own strengths and weaknesses. Diversity can help overcome weaknesses. In groups with shared industry expertise, inviting participants with complementary skills or outsider viewpoints can uncover new solutions. Bring together a group of accountants, therapists, strategic thinkers, and list-makers, and the room will be electric with possibility. Especially if an experienced facilitator leads the discussion.

A facilitator can draw out the strengths of those present and ensure that all fully participate in the group process. An outsider can ensure a free-flowing discussion that maximizes the collective experiences of the group members. Please reach out to me to discuss your facilitation needs. Let’s work together to create innovative, actionable solutions for your organization.
