Worth the Risk

In a sector built on careful stewardship and limited resources, risk can feel like a luxury. And after the last five years—pandemic, economic shifts, and social change—many nonprofits are understandably cautious. But taking smart, mission-aligned risks is exactly what’s needed to thrive.
In this article on the ASAE website, an association CEO describes how their team took a bold leap by holding a large in-person event shortly after pandemic restrictions lifted. Despite concerns, the result was a powerful reconnection with their members—and a renewed sense of purpose, all because they kept their mission at the center of the decision.
It’s true—many associations still haven’t seen a return to pre-pandemic participation. But as we continue to move forward, there’s a growing opportunity to reconnect in person and promote one of the most powerful benefits of membership: community. Events give us a chance to meet with our peers, to learn, to laugh, and to reignite our shared passion for this work.
The path forward isn’t always clear—but with purpose, courage, and a willingness to try, the results can be transformative. Take the risk. You might be surprised by the reward.
